WORK on a college's new multimillion pound building has been completed.

A tree planting event was held on Friday to mark the end of construction of the new Learning and Technology Centre at Colchester Institute’s Braintree campus in Church Lane, Bocking.

The new building, which cost £5m, forms part of the Institute's four-year masterplan to improve its Braintree campus and increase opportunities in vocational subjects.

The college hopes the new building will support subjects such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and help to train the next generation of workers in the Braintree district.

Eleven trees were planted during Friday's ceremony to represent companies supporting the project including Varsity Consulting, Cadman Construction, MCW Architects, Consibee, Max Fordham and TDR Groundworks.

Each tree has been inscribed with the various company names to help leave a "lasting memory" of their contribution to the new building.

College director Natalie Hines said: "We are delighted with the wonderful new facility, that genuinely can claim to be one of the best vocational facilities in the region.

"The project team worked superbly well with our main contractor, Cadman Construction and this is evident from the high standard in all the finishes throughout the building"

The new building opened to students earlier this month and the college says it has had positive feedback from most.

An official opening ceremony will take place in January and will coincide with an open event.

The event takes place in Monday, January 20.
