More than 1,000 families were left without water after a water main burst.

The water pipe in Sparrows Herene, Basildon burst at about 8am this morning and residents were without water for hours.

A number of resident took to social media to post about the incident.

Gym Club Kingswood posted online telling residents and customers it has water and they can use the services.

A spokesman for Essex and Suffolk Water said: "We were made aware of a burst water main in the Sparrows Herne area this morning, which affected water supplies in the area.

“Supply was initially restored to most properties by 9.15am, however, it was necessary to switch the supply back off for a short period to allow us to complete some final repairs.

"Water has now been restored to all properties.

“Temporary traffic lights will remain in place while we now repair the road surface which was damaged when the pipe burst, and we expect to have these removed by Saturday.

"If this changes, we will let people know via twitter on @eswater_care.

“We’d like to apologise for the inconvenience this has caused to our customers who have been affected by this, and thank them for their patience and understanding while we get things back to normal.”
