LEON Imber is the latest Blues fan to have his say.

New boss Sol Campbell endured an eye-opening start to his managerial career at Blues, both in the stands and the dugout.

Obviously he had a good idea of the situation he was coming into at Roots Hall.

With just five wins so far this calendar year the misguided Shrimpers are set for another season of struggle.

But an evening of defensive howlers, poor discipline and ultimately being the inferior side in every department resulted in a 7-1 drubbing to Darren Moore’s very impressive Doncaster side.

Such an evening would’ve been massively frustrating for the new boss. The thrashing highlighted many issues within the squad that he must attend to, and his reaction so far has been first class.

Most interestingly, the ex-England international was very hasty to express the lack of fitness within the squad. Blues’ injury crisis last season led to many weak starting line-ups and, as a consequence, a long run of very poor results.

The appointment of former Arsenal fitness coach Tony Colbert should be a great step in the right direction to make this squad fit for purpose, but careful consideration must be in place as this isn’t like fitness building in pre-season.

The current campaign is roughly a quarter of the way through already and overexerting the squad has the potential to be detrimental.

Come Saturday, although Campbell’s first game in charge was to be Southend’s 12th defeat this season, many signs were present that he can be the right man for the job.

A lot more belief, determination and organisation was shown and a match-up against the high-flying Ipswich was never going to be a pleasant one. All Shrimpers have now come to terms with this campaign being one that will see another relegation dogfight.

But it is massively important now for fans to get behind the team and the manager.
