ISAAC Hutchinson is confident Southend United can spring a surprise at Sunderland this weekend.

The Shrimpers have triumphed just once in 15 League games so far this season.

But, with new Blues boss Sol Campbell now in charge, Hutchinson will be heading into Saturday’s game believing the visitors can add more points to their tally.

“We want to play against the best teams at the best grounds but everything is feeling really positive with the new manager in charge and we are honestly confident we can go to Sunderland and get a result,” said Hutchinson.

“Training has been really good and we are all buying into what the manager is doing.

“He’s got us working hard and he’s changed the schedule a little bit too but it’s good and I thought there were plenty of positives to come out of the Ipswich game too.”

Blues were beaten 3-1 by the table-topping Tractor Boys on Saturday.

But Hutchinson felt the Shrimpers produced a vastly improved performance.

“I thought we were much better and we definitely used the ball much quicker,” said the 19-year-old.

“We played it out from the back well and it’s just about working on that final pass now but I think that will come with confidence.”

Hutchinson started Saturday’s clash and, having appeared 13 times already this term, he has now surpassed his total from the whole of last season.

And the midfielder is particularly enjoying being given a central role in the side.

“I’m happy to play anywhere the manager wants but I have always played in the middle and it’s where I feel most comfortable,” said Hutchinson.

“I think I can affect the game more from that position but I can play in a few positions really and I just want to keep on helping the team.”
