SOUTHEND United’s under-18 coach Danny Heath is urging his young players to not attach added significance to tomorrow night’s FA Youth Cup clash with Cambridge United.

The Shrimpers will host the U’s in a first round clash at Roots Hall.

But Heath does not want his team to feel under pressure to perform.

“We will approach it the same way as any other game and that will be the message to the boys as well,” said Heath.

“Yes, it’s at the stadium and it’s under the lights so it adds something a little bit different but it’s just another game and that’s the way we have to prepare for it.

“It’s just another game for me too.

“It’s about the boys going out and performing as well as they can do as a team and as individuals as well.

“First and foremost, it’s an opportunity for them to perform.”

Blues are currently seventh in the South East section of the Youth Alliance League, having been beaten in six of their 12 games this term.

Cambridge sit just one point and one place above the Shrimpers.

And, having already played the U’s twice this season, Heath knows it will be another tough test tomorrow.

“Cambridge are a good team,” said Heath.

“They can play football and it will be a tough game but it will be for them as well.

“We’ve won one and lost one against them so far this season so it should be a good game to watch.”

The U’s also have popular former Shrimpers striker Barry Corr in their coaching system at youth level with the Irishman now a development coach with the club.

Corr scored 63 goals in 185 games for Blues.

And Heath is looking forward to seeing the 34-year-old back at Roots Hall.

“Barry is a good lad so it will be good to see him,” said Heath.

“We get on well but probably not for 90 minutes tomorrow night.”

The Shrimpers head into the game having been beaten 4-1 by Stevenage on Saturday.

But, only after that match ended, did Heath allow his players to even think about the FA Youth Cup.

“The focus on the FA Youth Cup only started on Monday,” said Heath.

“When the draw was made I told the boys to focus on the games coming up, not this one.

“But as soon as Saturday’s game finished we spoke about tomorrow’s match and they’ve been training well.

“We’re pleased with how they’ve started the week.”
