TRAFFIC police urged motorists to avoid Sutton Bank on Sunday because of an incident involving an HGV.
The 25 per cent climb on the A170 between Thirsk and Helmsley is regularly blocked by HGVs stalling or getting stuck on the switchback road.
Vehicles towing caravans are banned from Sutton Bank for safety reasons.
North Yorkshire Police's control room tweeted: "HGV A170 Sutton Bank, please avoid the area while we try to get it cleared. Updates to follow."
It later tweeted: "A170 Sutton Bank has been opened after the HGV and traffic has been cleared. Thank you for your patience."
