A DEVASTATED mum has spoken of the horror of seeing her son undergo eight hours of surgery after falling from a balcony.

George Stephenson, 22, from Canvey is in a critical condition and remains in a coma after falling 20 feet from a hotel balcony in Ibiza.

The surgery was designed to repair a series of fractures to his face and relieve the pressure from a blood clot on his brain following the incident at Hotel Playasol Mare Nostrum.

Kind hearted members of the public have raised nearly £13,000 in a bid to support George, and his family.

Marion Stephenson, 52, said: “Because he suffered so many injuries he had a big clot on his brain.

“He needed the surgery to relieve some of the pressure on his brain.

“He had eight hours of surgery, they said they cannot remember how many plates they put in his face but the plates are supporting most of the fractures and breaks, which has then taken the pressure of his brain.

“They cannot even look at his spinal fractures yet.”

George remains in a critical condition with his family having flown out to be with him.

It is not yet known when he will recover or what lifelong difficulties he may face.

Devoted mum Marion added: “We just don’t know at this stage, we don’t know if he will be able to see or hear or speak.

“We don’t know what he will need in the future, if he survives, what kind of support will be needed. “It is so hard not knowing.

“They think he might have paralysis on the right hand side of his body and he has to be monitored closely now because there is a high risk of infection. But we are all here and staying strong for him and seeing him when we can.”

George’s parents flew to Ibiza as soon as they found it, and have been joined by his siblings, close friends and wider family, who cannot thank the public enough.

Marion said: “People we don’t know, and will probably never know, have been sending us messages and donating.

“It means so much to us and I don’t think we will ever be able to put into words how much it means to us all.

“When we get George home we will do everything we can, give him everything he needs to get him back to who he was.”
