DOZENS of flats could be built in place of two businesses in Hadleigh.

Plans have been submitted to see both Essex Carpets and Flooring, and neighbouring business Land Marque, on London Road demolished and a five storey flat block built in its place.

The application states that both buildings have “deteriorated over the years” and that the current occupiers have “found it uneconomical to maintain these units”.

Land Marque, a specialist garage repairing and maintaining Land Rover vehicles, moved to a new base in Purdeys Way, Rochford, two months ago with owners confirming the move is “going well”.

The application, submitted by Bells Residential, stated that both business have decided to move to more suitable locations with “better facilities”, although Essex Carpets and Flooring is still currently in London Road, with a member of staff telling the Echo they were “unaware of any plans” while the owner is currently on holiday.

The plans would see both businesses, as well as offices above, demolished and replaced by 36 flats - with a mix of 27 two bed-homes, and nine, one-bed homes.

The application states: “The proposed development will make an important contribution to the rejuvenation of the current site and surrounding area, especially in relation to providing good quality accommodation and provides an excellent opportunity for high quality accommodation which will enhance the appearance and identity of Hadleigh..”

It states: “Both these buildings have deteriorated over the years and the current occupiers have found it uneconomical to maintain these units and have both decided to move to a more suitable location with better facilities.”

The plans will now be assessed by Castle Point Council officers who will make recommendations to the planning committee.
