SOUTHEND United’s caretaker manager Gary Waddock is looking forward to the ‘challenge’ of facing an in-form Fleetwood Town at Roots Hall tomorrow.

Fleetwood are currently fourth in the League One standings having collected 13 points from their first seven games of the season.

But Waddock is excited to be taking on Joey Barton’s team.

“It’s a great challenge for us but it’s a game we’re all looking forward to,” said Waddock.

“Fleetwood have had a terrific start to the season and we’re pitting our wits against a good team at this level.

“We did that against Wycombe a few weeks ago and they’re top now.

“But if we can take what we’re doing on the training ground into tomorrow then we’ll give ourselves a chance.”

The Shrimpers have been beaten in all three of their home games in League One this season having previously suffered 13 League defeats at Roots Hall last term.

And Waddock is keen to put that right.

“I’ve been here a number of times with the opposition and it’s always been a difficult place to come,” said the former Wycombe Wanderers boss.

“Unfortunately it’s not been like that for the last nine or 10 months but we need to get back to making it difficult for the opposition.

“There’s no guarantee but we need everyone onside.”
