SOUTHEND Saxons will be looking to show their promotion credentials when they head to Brentwood in London One North tomorrow.

Southend started the season with an entertaining 34-26 win against Old Haberdashers on Saturday.

And Saxons skipper Ian Morrison is now keen to build on the opening day success.

“We have been clear that we are an ambitious side full of good players and we want to be pushing for those promotion places come the business end of the season,” said Morrison.

“It was good to get the win at the weekend but now we want to go and get another one against Brentwood.”

Southend started strongly on Saturday and raced into a 26-7 lead before the visitors hit back to level the scores.

And Morrison felt both halves were completely different.

“I know it’s a cliche but it really was a game of two halves,” said Morrison.

“There was some outstanding rugby by us in the first half and then perhaps we underestimated the resolve Old Habs had in the second half.

“But the way we reacted was ultimately a sign of a good team.

“We have spoken about playing the full 80 minutes and that showed true at the end and got us the win.”

However, Morrison knows it will be another tough test against Brentwood, who were relegated from the London & SE Premier Division last season.

“I’m sure Brentwood will be tough opponents but we’re looking forward to the game,” said Morrison.

“We want another win.”
