A tremor felt by people in the Helston area this evening has been confirmed as an earthquake.
Residents posted on social media to say they felt their houses shake at around 6pm.
Others have reported feeling something similar in Porthleven.
People have since said they felt it in Falmouth, Penryn and the surrounding villages.
The British Geological Survey’s real time seismographs show a tremor registered at the Carnmenellis seismic station.
The BGS has now confirmed a ‘seismic alert’ and said the tremor took place about 5km south west of Falmouth at a depth of 2.8km.
It had a magnitude of 2.2.
It said: “There are approximately 15 events of this size or greater annually in the UK, globally approx 700 per day.”
