A ELECTRICITY worker is starring in a new national safety film bidding to reduce the number of injuries and deaths caused by overhead power lines.

UK Power Networks has produced the new safety video, which includes a leading role for driver Scott Harrington.

The safety video shows how overhead lines can be lethal – with somebody killed or injured every month by contact with power networks.

The advice to the construction and haulage industry is always to look out and look up for overhead lines as contact with high voltage electrical equipment can be fatal.

Scott, 35, from Basildon, said: “When I was first approached about taking part in this film there was a mix of excitement and fear.

“It’s something a long way out of my comfort zone, but equally is so close to home that I felt I had to do it.”

In the film he plays the part of a lorry driver working for Grab and Co delivering sand when tragedy strikes.

Scott added: “We all go to work every day knowing the dangers are out there, but we take them for granted because we know our jobs and know how to do it in a way that we all go home to our families.

“It only takes a single moment to become distracted that can cause a chain of events that you can never undo. That one moment could destroy you, your family and colleagues, everything you have built up will be gone.

“In the film I play a character named Luke, a husband and father, who is with a colleague delivering materials to a site.

“Both characters in the film become distracted and my loader crane touches an overhead cable line so I had to act out the current shooting through my body and being killed instantly.

“If this film can save one person from injury or death and make people more aware of the dangers then it would have been a success. This has been a great experience for me and brilliant opportunity to be involved in spreading this safety message.”
