A GROUP of youths attempted to rob two teenagers in broad daylight during a terrifying incident at a popular beauty spot.

The teenagers were walking in Colchester Castle Park near to the fish pond, close to the High Street exit, at around 5.20pm on Monday when they were attacked.

They were approached by a group of youths, thought to be wearing tracksuits, who asked the girl what was inside her bag.

The thugs, understood to be all be aged around 15, attempted to take the girl’s belongings before a scuffle ensued.

Luckily the pair managed to escape unharmed but said they were followed to the bus station in Osborne Street in Colchester.

Ward councillor Simon Crow (Con, Castle) said it was not the first such incident to take place in the award-winning park.

He added: “I am shocked and appalled to hear about this incident taking place.

“Castle Park is somewhere people of all ages, including young families, go to enjoy.

“We are so lucky to have such a beautiful park in Colchester and the last thing we want is incidents like this taking place.

“I will fully support the police in their investigations to try and find those responsible.”

Essex Police said they are looking to trace any witnesses to the attempted robbery, including a group of people who are believed to have escorted the victims safely away from the area after the incident.

A spokesman said: “A teenage girl and boy were approached near to the fish pond by three teenage boys, two of whom have been described as mixed race and around 5ft 11ins tall and one who was white and around 6ft tall.

“They are all believed to be around 15-years-old.

“They attempted to steal the girl’s bag and, when they were unsuccessful, left through the gates near the war memorial.

“The pair were able to make their way home unharmed and we are attempting to trace everyone involved in the incident to progress our investigation.”
