EMERGENCY services closed a bridge in Colchester after reports of a suspicious package in the water.
Essex Police were called to the River Bridge, in East Street, just after 7pm last night.
Essex Fire and Rescue Service were also called in to help retrieve the package from the water.
A spokesman for Essex Police said: "Assisted by our colleagues in Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, the package was retrieved and found to be rubbish that had been disposed of."
The road reopened after around half an hour.
