CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed proposals to reduce the speed limit on a number of busy residential streets in a bid to improve safety around a primary school.

Essex County Council is consulting on plans to lower the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph on a number of streets off Fernlea, in the Braiswick area of Colchester.

Implementing a 20mph speed limit is normally outside Essex Highways’ remit. However, the move is being considered due to the proximity of and number of pedestrians visiting the nearby Braiswick Primary School.

Ward councillor Lewis Barber said community leaders had been canvassing residents views on lowering the speed limit for some time.

“We welcome the proposed introduction and consultation of a 20 mph speed limit on Fernlea following the community’s feedback,” he said.

“I’d like to thank those who have worked and campaigned on this issue, including Braiswick Residents’ Association, to get the proposals this far.”

If the plans are approved, the order will lower the speed limit in Anemone Court, Bluebell Way, Camomile Way, Celandine Court, Colts Foot Court, Gentian Court, Jonquil Way, Lavender Way, Sorrel Close and Stonecrop.

A report states: “It is recommended to implement the 20mph limit, due to the close proximity of Braiswick Primary School, and the subsequent volumes of foot and vehicular traffic during school start and finishing times, particularly that of more vulnerable road users.

“Introduction of the proposed 20 mph limit will help residents walking to school to feel safe, therefore assisting in the strategic aim of the council to help create great places for residents.

“The speeds are already low so the risk that the new speed limit will be exceeded is low.”
