ATHLETES are invited to run, cycle and swim for glory in this annual triathlon race.

The 9th Maldon Triathlon takes place this Sunday at Promenade Park in Maldon.

It consists of an open water swim in the River Blackwater, a cycle on the quiet and scenic roads of the Dengie Peninsula and finishes with a lapped run around the park and Hythe Quay.

There are sprint and Olympic distances for athletes, and there will be activities throughout the day for spectators and racers.

A spokesman said: “With plenty of facilities for the whole family, activities throughout the day and countless cafes lining the route the event is sure to draw a huge crowd of spectators and provide a great atmosphere for all.

“We hope you enjoy the Maldon Triathlon and can’t wait to get you across that finish line.”

The sprint race is a 750m swim, 28km cycle ride and a 5km run.

The Olympic race is a 1.5km swim, 45km cycle and a 10km run.

The races start at 9.50am with athletes heading into the water of the river Blackwater to do one or two loops.

The cycle course will take riders through Latchingdon, Mayland and St Lawrence before coming back towards Maldon.

Finally, racers return to do several laps around Promenade Park to finish the course.

Every entrant will receive an event memento and goody bag at registration, as well as a medal at the finish.

Prizes will be awarded for gold, silver, and bronze for men and women as well as for veteran male and veteran female.

Other organisations who will attend are Romford Sports Massage, Blackwater Leisure Centre, Tri n Swim WELL and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance.
