2. Get your inner Saxon on at Southend Museum.

The museum is hosting a day of Anglo-Saxon discovery on Saturday (July 27) from 10am-4pm. Try out swords, shields and chain mail and handle replica artefacts from the Prittlewell Princely Burial chamber. 3. See the Very Hungry Caterpillar at Hyde Hall.

The RHS gardens in Rettendon will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the best-selling children’s book. Starting from tomorrow (Saturday) and lasting the entire six week break, Eric Carle’s much-loved classic will be brought to life with giant willow sculptures and fruits, hands-on craft activities and storytelling. Visitors will also have the chance to follow The Very Hungry Caterpillar on interactive adventures around the garden. Adults £11.80, children, £5.90.

4. Catch the Wind in the Willows at Hanningfield Nature Reserve.

Join Mole, Ratty and Badger on their mad-cap adventures in the heart-warming tale of friendship, mishap and mayhem in this brand new adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s family favourite. A pacey, action-packed, humorous show with live music, this outdoors performance takes place in the grounds of Hanningfield Reservoir on Wednesday (July 24). Adult £12, children £8. 5. Get crafty at the Essex Police Museum

The museum, in Chelmsford is hosting a fingerprint art day on Saturday (July 27). Youngsters can find out about fingers prints and use their own to make colourful pictures. The session will be on from 10am-3.30pm.
