MORE than £2 million is set to be spent on improvements to major roundabouts in Tendring.

To improve safety and journey times on the A133 from Colchester to Clacton, Essex County Council is seeking to bring a contractor on board to complete works to two roundabouts at Frating and Weeley.

County Hall and the South East Local Enterprise Partnership are jointly funding the project.

A report seeking approval from Kevin Bentley, councillor responsible for infrastructure, said: “The proposed schemes aim to improve access from the east into Colchester; a key employment zone in Essex, improving links to and between employment markets and suppliers.

“The traffic enhancements will also provide safety measures along this route.”

The works will see a new left turn lane installed from the A120 link road to the A133 at Frating roundabout, alongside the widening of the road and new rumble strips.

The A133 will be widened at the Weeley Roundabout, while speed cameras will be installed between the Frating roundabout and the Progress Way roundabout at Little Clacton.

Essex County Council is set to put forward £525,000, with an enterprise partnership grant totalling £2.7 million making up the rest of the cost.

The cost of installing speed cameras along the stretch of the A133 will reach £150,000, with £2.1 million spent on works to improve the two roundabouts.
