SOUTHEND United striker Simon Cox will not be ready to return to training this week.

Cox was named Blues’ player of the year last season after scoring 17 goals.

But Shrimpers boss Kevin Bond does not expect Cox to feature in either of his side’s pre-season friendlies this week.

“Simon has strained both calves and I don’t expect him to be back in training this week,” said the Blues chief.

“But I would much rather him recover properly than have him try and come back too soon and spend even longer on the sidelines.”

The Shrimpers face two National League South sides this week as they travel to Billericay Town tomorrow night before heading to Weymouth on Friday evening.
