A FOUNDATION set up in memory of 12-year-old Micky Bennett hopes a lodge in his name for sick children and their families will be the start of his legacy.

Micky’s Lodge would give people a peaceful place to go with their sick children and is the first ambition of The Fight Like Micky Organisation.

It was set up by Dagenham rapper D-Saro - real name, Kevin Dusaro, who registered the foundation in secret from Micky’s parents, Lisa and Dave Bennett. He surprised them with news at one of his shows at O2 Academy Islington, last week.

Lisa and Dave had plans to set up a foundation but Kevin understood that it wouldn’t be at the forefront of their minds having just lost a child.

Kevin said: “I wanted Lisa and Dave to have something to focus on and I know they wanted to do something like this.

“Now is the toughest part for them. Everyone comes together for the funeral but during the days afterwards people start to disappear. I often wake up sad and think about Micky so for his parents, I can’t imagine how they must feel. The organisation will give them something to get up for. Everything they do for the it is in the name of Micky to continue his memory and legacy.”

Kevin met Micky and family through a mutual friend and was tasked to help track down rapper, Stormzy, who visited Micky in hospital.

Lisa said: “When Kevin pulled me up on stage at his show to reveal what he had done, I was in tears - I was amazed. It was something we were looking into but hadn’t got round to it yet. I’m glad its done. Kevin and his team at 4front Records, have taken care of everything. Kevin has become like a son to me and has become a massive part of this journey on our life.

“The foundation will be a non-profit organisation and everything that goes through us goes straight back out.

“The lodge we want to raise money for, won’t just be any lodge but for kids with no immune system who have to be isolation during treatment as a common cold can kill them. It would also act as an end of life place as well.

“We need to raise a total of £200k to £300k which is not going to be easy. “But the reason we didn’t want to be a charity is we don’t want this to go massive, just small and real and be able to reach out to families who are going through what we did.”

Micky bravely fought Acute T-Cell Lymphoma, his efforts gaining the respect of rapper Stormzy and England captain Harry Kane among others.

He died on April 13. His mother added: We are meeting with a couple kids from Great Ormond Street Hospital for ideas and they are who matter the most in this. Micky always wanted to help others.”
