Max Whitlock has won pommel horse gold at the European Gymnastics Championships in Szczecin while Ellie Downie also claimed her second medal of the event.

Double Olympic champion Whitlock, who is based in Basildon, returned to his dominant best with a score of 15.533 to take his second European title at the discipline, and his first since 2014.

Meanwhile Downie, fresh from her all-around silver medal on Friday night, returned to the stage to win a bronze medal in the vault with scores of 14.400 and 14.233.

Whitlock's performance was another sign of his return to form after a difficult 2018, when he finished out of the European medals in Glasgow after making an uncharacteristic error.

The 26-year-old had also missed out on retaining his world title by the narrowest of margins in Doha, but he believes his win in Poland can pave the way to more Olympic success in Tokyo next year.

Whitlock said: "The build-up has been a big learning curve for me, there has been a lot of pressure and expectation put on me which I've had to learn to cope with.

"This gives me a huge confidence boost.

"I always said last year that I was gaining in experience and building my routine, so now, to produce a score like that and win gold feels really good."
