Soldiers rushed to the aid of a cyclist who had come off his bike in Sutton Road, Southend, last night.

The incident took place near the roundabout which connects East Street and Royston Avenue and emergency services also rushed to the scene.

Witnesses described how soldiers at the nearby Territorial Army barracks, in East Street, helped tend to the cyclist who lay injured on the ground until the emergency services arrived.

Police confirmed they received a call shortly before 10pm.

Sutton Road was closed by police while the scene was dealt with and the fire service also attended but were stood down on scene.

The cyclist was taken to hospital as a precaution but is not thought to have suffered serious injuries.

The road was reopened about 40 minutes later.

No other vehicles were involved.
