Drivers were trapped for seven hours after a lorry overturned on the A130 leaving all three lanes blocked yesterday afternoon.
Essex Police began turning vehicles round on the northbound carriageway of the A130 after the HGV flipped onto its side shortly before 4pm yesterday.
Drivers were left trapped as the authorities dealt with the lengthy task of clearing the carriageway.
Witnesses reported several police cars and fire engines on scene as emergency workers worked to clear the road.
A passer-by said: "It really is quite unbelieveable.

All vehicles caught up in the traffic have been turned around.
We are now working to remove the HGV and to re-open the road.
Thank you for your assistance.
"The lorry is literally crossing all three lanes going northbound. People were actually getting out of their car to walk about and get a look at it."
He added: "It's going to causing huge disruption to a lot of people."
It was not until 10.45pm when Essex Police reported that all drivers were turned round but the road remained blocked into the early hours.
The driver of the lorry was not seriously injuried and has been reported for careless driving.
Essex Police thanked motorists for their patience.
