Green fingered residents will get a chance to get their hands on some free plants to make the borough bloom.

Colchester Council’s annual Trees for Years giveaway takes place today, Saturday, February 2.

It will see more than 2,000 native trees, shrubs and fruit bushes handed out for free.

It takes place from 10am until 1pm or until stock runs out.

Each of the plants is chosen for its value to bees and wildlife.

On the day, each household will be able to visit Rowan House, in Sheepen Road, and choose up to three plants to take away.

Schools, community groups or parish councils can take up to fifteen.

Trees include field maple, silver birch, red stem dogwood, yellow stem and shrubs including lavender, bird cherry, blackcurrant, gooseberries and raspberries.

The trees are only available to borough residents, who will be asked to show proof of living in the borough with a utility bill or similar document.

Residents should also bring their own bags.

Now in its 13th year the scheme has been made possible thanks to £2,000 sponsorship by idVerde, who help the council maintain green spaces.

Andy Fulcher, of idVerde, said: “We are extremely pleased to support Trees for Years once again.

“Not only is this a great scheme to help residents and community groups to green up their gardens for free, but the day is always a great opportunity for our team to meet and get to know Colchester’s residents.”

Last year 700 people turned out to get their hands on plants.
