TWO heroic police officers who helped save the life of a vulnerable young man.

Sgt Richard Ambrose and PC Matthew Parker, who are members of the Braintree and Uttlesford policing team, came to the aid of the man who was threatening to jump off a bridge and onto a busy road in March last year.

The duo took the decision to put themselves at risk by pulling the man back over the barrier to safety. He was then taken to hospital where he received the support and treatment he required.

Both Mr Ambrose and Mr Parker were handed their commendations by the chief constable of Essex Police, Ben-Julian Harrington, during a special ceremony in Chelmsford.

Mr Harrington praised the officers’ bravery, professionalism and decisive action which helped to save the vulnerable man’s life.

He added: “It brings me great pleasure to host these ceremonies to celebrate ordinary individuals taking extra-ordinary steps to help save the lives of others, protect the vulnerable and keep the people of Essex safe.

“It might be what our officers, staff and volunteers do on a daily basis but their actions are courageous and I take great pride in being able to award them.”

The two officers earned praise from their direct boss, Inspector Tim Scott, who paid tribute to the duo immediately after they received their commendations on Monday.

He wrote on Twitter: "Two of my team members received their commendations today - absolutely great to see. Well done Sergeant Ambrose and PC Parker. Thoroughly deserved."

A commendation is one of the highest honours a chief constable can give his officers and celebrates those who demonstrate bravery and courageousness during dangerous and difficult situations.
