YOBS have vandalised a community centre using a catapult to smash 22 windows at the public hall.

Police have launched an investigation after ongoing issues surrounding anti-social behaviour at the pavilion, in Woodside Park, Manor Road, Benfleet.

Multiple reports have been made of graffiti, arson to a wheelie bin, and a number of windows being smashed.

Nine were smashed prior to Christmas, and a further 13 have been smashed since.

Police believe that youngsters have been using a catapult to fire marbles and ball bearings at the windows on the top floor.

The building is owned by Castle Point Council, with funds coming from the public purse for repairs.

A spokesman for the council said: “Nine windows were broken and were boarded up just before the Christmas break.

“An additional 13 that have been broken over the last week or so. In total 22 are broken and every time they are fixed / replaced they are broken again within a matter of days. The council is looking at alternate options.

“This is just mindless vandalism and ultimately the cost is borne by Castle Point residents.”

A spokesman for the Castle Point Community Policing team said: “The pavilion owned by Castle Point Council at Woodside Park, Manor Road, Benfleet has been targeted in recent months with graffiti, arson to a wheelie bin and many of the windows smashed.

“It would appear a catapult has been used to fire marbles and ball bearings at the windows of the pre-school on the top floor.

“This has also affected the Benfleet Cricket Club who use the same facility.
