THE debate around superfast broadband has been ongoing for weeks.

For many in our towns and villages the lack of existing service hampers their day-to-day lives.

Our lives have become very much dependent on it - for online grocery shopping, homework and business.

Many people were disappointed when it was revealed Maldon District Council could vote to renege on a deal to spend £45,000 on superfast broadband.

But at a meeting last week councillors vetoed the suggestion from the finance committee, saying having fast internet is “integral” to life in our rural areas.

Without it they feared businesses would not be able to thrive and help boost the economy.

The finance committee had defended its decision saying the roll-out is falling behind schedule and not all homes will benefit.

But living in a rural area should never mean you get poorer services.

It is good to see councillors took note - and listen to the people on the ground about the importance of this service.

Our councillors - who represent us - should be striving for the best for us.

And they should be doing it all of the time.
