BASILDON and Canvey will both continue to have live reindeer at their Christmas events, despite other towns cancelling after shocking abuse of some animals was revealed.

Campaign group Animal Aid set up hidden cameras in three different reindeer centres.

The worst findings were at Kent Reindeer Centre, where the animals were allegedly kicked. Other footage showed the reindeer in poor health.

However, a spokeswoman from Kent Reindeer Centre said all its animals are “much loved and well cared for”, and said the person who kicked the animals had been dismissed.

Eight live reindeer events have now been cancelled following the release of the footage, including at Thurrock Garden Centre.

However, Basildon and Canvey Councils have both confirmed they will still be having reindeer at their events.

Councillor Andrew Schrader, chairman of the economic development and growth committee at Basildon Council, said: “We obviously condemn any form of abuse or cruelty against animals. When we booked reindeer to be part of the festive event in Basildon Market again this Saturday, we made sure that we hired a reputable company, who put the welfare of their animals first and take animal welfare seriously. I have assurances that the reindeer attending our event are well looked after and are used to attending public events.

“The reindeer drew a great crowd last year and we hope visitors young and old will enjoy meeting them again.”

A spokesman from Canvey Council said the company they use meets all animal welfare standards and they had no concerns about the company they use. She added they were aware of the press surrounding the use of reindeer and will review their stance if they have any future concerns.

Animal Aid’s campaign manager, Tor Bailey said: “Our investigations have revealed the shocking suffering of these gentle animals. Reindeer are sensitive wild animals, not props to be paraded around and used for human entertainment.”
