A SINGER and environmentalist from Leigh is supporting a huge event today at the National History Museum.

Laura Louise, known as Elle L, supported the Fashion for Conservation event at the museum in London this evening.

Elle L, originally from Grand Drive, Leigh, has joined forces with the Whitley Fund for Nature, who support environmental groups worldwide, to present the sustainable runway show with the aim of raising a million pounds for grassroots conservation heroes.

The show will see speeches and demonstrations to embrace the need to change the face of the fashion industry to reduce its impact on the environment.

Fashion industry giants including Venetia Scott of British Vogue and Caroline Rush of British Fashion Council will be attending, with a pledge towards the event’s fundraising goal already made by the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.

Elle L will also be releasing new music in the near future, inspired by her environmentalism and her time spent researching in the Amazon Rainforest.

Speaking to the Echo, she said: “I’ve spent a great deal of time researching how the fashion industry affects the environment, it’s critical that we make it sustainable.

“It’s been amazing to immerse myself into all this and really push for the fashion industry to become sustainable as possible. This event will be a monumental thing to happen.”

Inspired by the impact of Whitley Award winners over the past quarter century, WFN have set up a 25th Anniversary Fund. Their target is to raise £1 million to enable the charity to increase vital support to projects where funds are urgently needed to preserve endangered wildlife and wild places.

Upcoming projects for Fashion for Conservation include partnerships with the United Nations to achieve their sustainability goals.

Elle L added: “As an artist I'm incredibly inspired by nature and want to use my voice to protect her. The fashion industry has been part of the problem to our environmental crisis for years.

“It's now time that it became part of the solution.

“This night marks the coming together of two worlds. If we can create in a way that respects our ecosystem, then we can protect our own and future generations.”
