St Botolph's Circus plaza plans move a step nearer

Essex County Council will start survey work at the town centre site from the end of January, which will involve a lane of traffic being closed to motorists.

Last year it was revealed the council was considering redesigning the roundabout to try to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution and anti-social behaviour.

The roundabout, next to Colchester Town station and the magistrates’ courts, would be filled in and a plaza created.

A new junction could be created connecting Southway, Mersea Road, St Botolph’s Street and Magdalen Street, controlled by traffic lights.

It was said to be one of four options the council was considering to improve the area.

Among the early proposals was to create a new junction between Southway and Stanwell Street to enable right turning both ways and access to St John’s car park.

New cycle routes are also on the cards.

The council has not confirmed further details of these proposals.

A spokeswoman said: “Planners and engineers are currently developing options for improvements at St Botolph’s roundabout, which will be influenced by the proposed tests and investigations on the ground.

“However, capital investment funding will have to be sourced for the project.

“Once options are confirmed, officers will begin to consult interested parties and the wider public in Colchester.”

The spokeswoman added the survey work will take place between January 28 and February 16 and will involve one lane closure on the A134 at Southway and Magdalen Street at times.

“This may cause some limited delays during the day, so please allow extra time for your journey.

“Signs on these and nearby roads will warn motorists and other road users ahead of the works starting.”

Lee Scordis, Labour Colchester councillor for Old Heath and The Hythe, said he had made enquiries with the council about the plans which included creating a plaza outside the station.

"I look forward to hearing an update from Essex County Council and the borough," he added.
