RAYLEIGH High Street was closed by emergency services as they attempted to help a man taken ill in a church bell tower.

Police, an air ambulance, and the fire service rushed to the high street last night at around 8.45pm.

A large area was cordoned off outside the FitzWimarc School, Hockley Road, as emergency services attempted to access the bell tower.

Police have confirmed a man was taken ill in the bell tower of the church - which can be difficult to access.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "We were called shortly by the ambulance service before 8.45pm on Tuesday, November 6 with reports a man had been taken ill in the bell tower of Holy Trinity Church in Hockley Road, Rayleigh.

"We assisted with road closures while paramedics and firefighters accessed the building to help him."
