A FAMILY who lost their baby boy after he was born 15 weeks premature will treasure the precious memories they were able to create.

Vicky and Dan Dewey were left heartbroken when she mum was rushed to hospital in labour with their twins Blaine and Thea.

Sadly, Blaine passed away after just 14 days but the family say he will remain in their hearts.

Dad Dan said: “Both babies had complications which are common when born this early and meant they had blood flow and breathing problems. But while Thea was able to progress onto different ventilators, Blaine didn’t really respond. He was in a catch-22 because his lungs were so underdeveloped, but the ventilator was too strong for him.

“Doctors soon discovered Blaine had a bleed on the brain and on September 23, he lost his fight for life. We had been told briefed to expect the worst. We brought our two older boys in and gave them the choice whether they wanted to say goodbye which they did.

“They were absolutely heartbroken but we got to spend a few hours together as a family.

“With our youngest boy, who is four, we didn’t know how to explain it at first and weren’t sure he would understand but he asked how are the babies.

“We told him Blaine was no longer with us, but that every time the moon shined that was Blaine. He was obviously upset and all the boys have their moments but they are doing ok.

“They have had support at school and everyone here.

“When Thea is old enough, we will share the story with her and she will always be one of two.

“Although he has passed away we got to know him and we did see little quirks in him that we will treasure - like him sticking his hand out to his mum. He would only ever stick a leg out for me.”

A funeral was arranged last Wednesday and saw dozens of friends and family come to say their goodbyes.

Dan added: “It was a very emotional service. Me and my wife agreed it should be a celebration of life but we struggled to see how we could celebrate a life that was only 14 days long.

“We just remember the good times through those days and through Vicky’s pregnancy.

“As mum and dad, we were obviously in the forefront but we understand Blaine was not just a son - he was a brother, a grandson, a nephew to everyone.
