A CHOIR for the over 50s is celebrating 10 years of success, continuing its initial aim of “showing older people in a positive light”.

Thurrock Golden Voice celebrated their 10th anniversary last week with a party for members.

In October 2008, with two years funding from the arts council, and support from Thurrock CVS, the first members came together to form the choir.

John York, chair of Golden Voices, said: “Choir members give up their time for free to entertain groups in the community, therefore the party was an excellent opportunity to say thanks to all for their commitment over the past 10 years.

“We had a great afternoon, with superb catering, and one of our members, Viv, made a fantastic cake to help us celebrate.”

At the end of the initial two year project, membership had grown and those involved wished to continue and therefore Thurrock Golden Voices became a fully constituted and independent group in 2010

The choir sing a range of songs that you wouldn’t necessarily expect the over 50s to be singing, as well as the occasional ‘old favourite’.

Karen Glazzard and Alan Phillips were founder members of the choir and cut the cake at the party.

Karen said: “There were only 5 of us at the first meeting in 2008, and to see the choir now at more than 50 members is so exciting.

“Singing in a group brings both physical and mental benefits, we smile and laugh at every rehearsal and lasting friendships have been established.

“We always like new members so if anyone out there loves singing you would be welcome to come and give us a go.”

Daryl Branch has been musical director with the choir for the large majority of the 10 years.

The choir is open to everyone, with no auditions required, and reheases on Friday evenings at The Beehive Resource Centre, West Street, Grays.
