A group of cricket fans walked 20 miles to help boost the coffers of a community project.

The group walked from Maldon to the Cloudfm County Ground in Chelmsford last weekend, battling soaring temperatures.

The walk helped raise more than £10,000 for the Essex Sporting Chance - Walk For Wheels challenge to help projects across the county.

On Saturday the team of 20, made up of Essex Lord’s and Lady Taverners, started out from Maldon High Street walking along the river Chelmer.

They stopped for refreshments at Heybridge Basin, courtesy of the Tiptree Tearoom, before heading to Paper Mill Lock and onto Chelmsford.

Once they arrived at the ground they watched the Vitality Blast T20 match between Essex Eagles and Hampshire.

The team were supported by ‘Allo ‘Allo actress Vicki Michelle who has been involved in the charity since 1999.

The money raised is going towards providing mini-buses and sports wheelchairs to schools across the county.

Spencer Davis, Chairman of the Essex Lord’s Taverners, said: “Many local companies and supporters have really got behind the Essex Sporting Chance - Walk for Wheels and while it was certainly a challenge for everyone who took part, it was a hugely rewarding day knowing that we were raising money for some fantastic and vital projects across Essex.

“We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the walk such a success.”
