Canvey island runner Kevin Massey completed the New York Marathon in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care and achieved a personal best of 4 hours and 39minutes.
Massey, 51, is a seasoned marathon runner. In the past he has run the London event four times and was a monster hit in the Loch Ness.
He said, ‘Running the New York Marathon was an amazing experience.
“I was inspired to take up the baton of Marie Curie Cancer Care after reading Sir Ralph Fiennes’ autobiography and his own personal challenge of climbing Mount Everest in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.
“My parents both died of cancer, so the charity’s work means something to me too.”
He added: “I have ran several other marathons in the past, but have never been serenaded by the gospel Harlem Singers.
“It was a most welcome and uplifting sound. I also found the skyline of Manhattan very breathtaking view.”
Massey hopes to raise £1,000 and the money will help to support the charity’s local nursing appeal in Essex.
They have 63 Marie Curie nurses working in the county and last year their care enabled nearly 900 terminally ill people to remain in the comfort of their own homes during their last days.
They need to raise at least £450,000 over the next year to fund the nursing service in Essex and ensure that they reach more people than ever before.
