YOUNGSTERS smashed championship records at the Eastern and Essex Indoor Championships at Lee Valley.

Basildon AC’s hurdles star Michael Shields, Billericay’s Connie Forman and Thurrock Harriers’ William Adeyeye all wrote their names into the record books.

Shields, the reigning English Schools 100m hurdles champion, clocked 8.25s to win the under-17 men’s 60m hurdles while Mayflower School pupil Forman leaped out to 5.13m to smash the under-15 girls long jump record.

Forman also won an Essex silver medal and Eastern bronze in the 60m hurdles (9.57s).

Adeyeye, meanwhile, set a championship record and UK-leading time in the under-15 boys 60m hurdles of 8.57s. He also won gold in the shot-put (12.83m).

Basildon AC’s Harrison Smith also had a notable championships, winning both the under-17 men’s 800m (2m 4.28s) and the pole vault (3.20m) while club-mate Mae Bullman went over a life-time best of 1.60m to win the high jump. She also finished third in the triple jump (9.71m).

Basildon AC had another high jump success in the under-13 girls competition which was won by Jessica Krise (1.30m), while in the senior ranks, Stephen Strange won the 800m in 1m 57.82s.

Southend AC also had plenty of success.

Jake King won the men’s 400m in 50.33s with team-mate Alex Milbank finishing third (55.97s), Basildon’s Jack Avery was sandwiched between the pair in silver medal position (52.80s).

Meanwhile, some of Southend’s older statesmen also tasted success.

Graham Eastty won the veteran men’s 400m in a PB of 55.84s while Keith Palmer won an Essex gold (and Eastern silver) in the one-mile walk (10m 26.69s).

Southend High School for Boys’ Louis Dunmore won the under-17 men’s shot (10.78m).
