BASILDON AC duo Michael Shields and Isobel Ives added to their medal collections this summer at last weekend’s UK School Games.

It has been a fantastic summer for both teenagers and they rounded it off by representing the South East at the huge multi-sport championships for under-17 athletes in Manchester.

FitzWimarc School pupil Shields capped a particularly memorable year with a gold medal in the 100m hurdles.

The 15-year-old already had an English Schools gold medal to his name from earlier in the summer and he showed the confidence that had given him in Manchester.

He stormed to victory in the third quickest time of his life (13.33s) despite being drawn away from the action in the outside lane.

Middle-distance athlete Ives also went into the championships brimming with confidence having won the 800m title at the English Championships five days earlier.

The 16-year-old put herself in a great position to add another gold to her collection, but just could not hang in the closing stages as Carys McAulay – the English Schools champion – overtook her to take the win.

Ives, who finished in 2m 11.24s, now has a full collection of medals from the major championships this summer, with the silver in Manchester adding to her gold from the English Championships and bronze at the English Schools Championships.

Former Southend High School for Girls pupil Michelle Hughes continued her fine 2014 with a gold medal in the 300m hurdles.

Hughes never looked like being beaten, despite stuttering at the penultimate hurdle, and finished in 43.90s. She then added to her medal haul with a silver with the South East’s 4x300m relay squad.
