GIANNI Frankis has started to look ahead to an exciting summer season after injury meant his indoor campaign ended prematurely.

A niggling hamstring injury has meant the sprint hurdler will not be challenging for a place on Great Britain’s squad for the World Indoor Championships in March.

But Frankis has revealed he won’t be off the track for too long and is eager for the summer season to come around when he has the twin targets of the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

“I’ve had a persistent hamstring injury for about a month now,” said Frankis, who was troubled by it as he represented the Commonwealth in the 60m hurdles at the Glasgow International last weekend.

“I’ve done a couple of races with a medium amount of pain where I knew I would win and get through it.

“But when it comes to running with the injury in the big races, you just can’t do yourself justice.

“When I was warming up on Saturday it was hurting and when you are like that, you can’t focus on the race.”

Frankis had a bright start in Saturday’s race where he took on GB rival Will Sharman and American Jeff Porter.

But after clipping the second hurdle, he never recovered and eased right down to finish third in 8.10s.

Frankis had a scan yesterday on his hamstring and only expects to be out for three to four weeks.

“The indoor season is so short that I won’t be able to race again, however, my long-term focus has always been the outdoor season.

“It’s only a short-term injury and my osteopath Sara, at Cedar Hall Clinics, has been great with me and will get me back quickly I’m sure.

“Although I like running indoors, the outdoor season is always where I peak and this year’s pretty exciting, with the Europeans and Commonwealths coming up. I believe I’ve got a chance of being in the mix for both of them.”

Frankis already has a Commonwealth Games qualifying time in the bag and ran just four-hundreths outside the European Championships qualifying time last summer.

But with the men’s 110m hurdles being one of Britain’s strongest events, he knows he will have to hit the ground running once the summer seasons starts.

“It will be down to the races in the summer,” said Frankis.

“I’m looking forward to it. I’m in good shape generally and that’s what makes it exciting.

“I’ve been training well and know I’m going to be in good condition when the summer comes around and that’s what makes it really exciting.”
