Extra CCTV needed to combat graffiti vandals

EXTRA CCTV cameras are set to be installed at a park plagued by graffiti vandals.

It comes after the yobs left their tags all over King George’s Playing Fields, Rayleigh, leaving the council to clear them up.

They were scrawled across the skatepark, benches, and play equipment last weekend and had to be removed.

Town councillor Dave Sperring said: “We are doing all we can to keep it clean. You might think to put extra cameras in isn’t cost effective because it only costs about £20 to take graffiti off. But if it keeps going on it’s a repetitive cost .”

They are now looking into what would be the best type of cameras to complement those they already have in the park.

Should make an example of the main grafitti vandals in the Southend/Rayleigh area that are looked up to. Wastes of space, like the violent mouthing "Mace" from Shoebury for example deserves a good spell in the stocks. Maybe we should bring in tar and feathering as a deterrent.

What utter rubbish the cost of monitored CCTV is astronomical both to install and maintain.

Unless its acted upon IMMEADIATLY there is little point of taking film of a yob with a can spraying with a hood on then giving it to the Police who really do not have either the time or interest to take the recording from anyone.

The cost of CCTV will never be cheaper than removing the graffitti every time the tagger will soon give up.

These sprayers are often well educated people trying to make a name for themselves and they are to inadequate to find any other way of doing it.

Just make a policy of removal within 3 days, it will work.

CCTV? How about men in balaclavas carrying baseball bats?

Great idea to publicise the location of the new cameras, so as the vandals can go and deface something else. How about putting them in without making it public, then catching the miscreants who will be unaware they are being filmed.

I hope we can draw a line under this soon and focus of the real issues ....

A covert hit squad as Eric the Red suggested , Let them patrol areas that are known graffiti targets , A few smashed hands and a good kicking will cure us of these scumbags ! The writing is on the wall, act now people !!

Either: place a copper in the park for one week and lock the little scrotes up, or, cheaper still, have the council send a bloke with a pot of paint and a roller each day to paint over it all.

Or...have a graffiti exhibition announce a prize for the best tag then round the dopey sods up once you have their 'signatures' - a tactic I think was used in the US once.

Some graffiti does look good, I must admit, but this is usually done legally by graffiti artists. Other then that, most looks sh!t, and probably de values surrounding houses by £10,000. Cheers boys.

Sad it should come to this as being the only answer. Ten years in jail for the vandals would be better, but I can't see the wallies that run the judicial system agreeing to that.

Not a great idea to just go for one strategy. Needs a mix of cameras, quick removal and covert policing. Nahh, foget it, far too sensible.

Once caught, get the vandals to clean it off as part of the punishment.

What's this report about? Purple flag just awarded and Police say crime is down???? Just cannot be happening if we are to believe the authorities! Yeah-right!

If they are ever caught, their parents should be locked up with them.
Low-life scum.
