Woman rescued from fire by workmen in Southend

TWO workmen rescued an elderly woman from a house fire this afternoon.

Firefighters from Southend were called to the semi-detached house in Oakhurst Road, Southend, at 1pm.

The men, working on the house opposite, were able to get into the house and bring the elderly woman out before crews arrived.

She was left suffering burns and the effects of smoke inhalation.

The fire was in the ground floor front room and the entire property was smoke-logged. Crews donned breathing apparatus and used one hose reel to extinguish the fire by 1.30pm.

The woman was left in the care of the ambulance service.
