Updated: Crash shuts Southend road

A 17-YEAR-OLD boy has been left with life-threatening injuries after a scooter he was on collided with a police car.

The incident happened at 2am this morning in Bournemouth Park Road, Southend, at the junction with Central Avenue.

The collision involved a black and blue Yiben scooter which was in collision with the side of a marked police vehicle.

There were two people on the scooter, a 17-year-old boy from Benfleet and an 18-year-old man from Southend.

Both were taken by ambulance to Southend General Hospital. The 17-year-old was then transferred to Queens Hospital in Romford with life-threatening head injuries, while the 18-year-old was later released.

The occupants of the police vehicle, both local constables, a man and a woman, were taken by ambulance to Southend General Hospital and were later released having been treated for minor injuries.

The incident has been referred to the IPCC.

The road was closed for investigations until about 8am this morning.

Police at the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for any witnesses to contact them on 101.
