I want to create second Southend Airport car park

Off-road proposals – beyond the gate is where Steve Murray owns a yard Off-road proposals – beyond the gate is where Steve Murray owns a yard

A MAN wants to turn his back yard into a car park for airport users.

Self-employed builder Steve Murray has lodged plans to transform the land, at the rear of Smallholdings Cottages, on Eastwoodbury Lane, Southend.

The unused yard, which is about the size of half a football pitch, would cater for as many as 150 cars.

Mr Murray said the facility was a private venture and did not involve airport bosses.

He is also planning to run a regular mini-bus shuttle service, taking passengers to and from the airport.

Explaining the reasons behind his plan, Mr Murray said: “There is always going to be a need for something like this.

“Millions of passengers are going to be flying from the airport soon, and I’m sure it can’t expand its own parking that much more.

“I had lived here for ten years and then the airport expansion came along – that’s when I thought of the idea.”

He said the car park would be 24-hour and create six jobs for residents – four full-time and two part-time.

However, one leading councillor has already slammed the plan, claiming the development was inappropriate for a residential area.

Mark Flewitt, who represents St Laurence ward, has already referred the matter to the council’s development and control committee, noting his objections.

He said: “If I lived opposite there and knew it was going to be a private car park I would be concerned.”

However, Mr Murray claimed residents would not be directly affected by the proposed service.

He said most of the neighbouring properties had been demolished, making way for the expansion.

He also said he had not finalised what he planned to charge for the service.

If the plans get the go-ahead, the park-and-ride service could be up and running this year.

People have until March 7 to contact Southend Council with any objections.

No one from Southend Airport was available to comment.

I always envisaged that particular road would be turned into an emergency road to serve that end of the runway if a major incident should happen.
Oh well, wrong again!

i have good money to bet that the council reject this proposal..

after all why would the council want any real local business men gain from what they think is there own golden goose but what is actually a white elephant!!

A car park is inappropriate for a residential area, but an airport runway is not? Hmmm.

This is a great business idea. The only flaw I can see is that he will have to compete against free parking in so much of the borough. Just park up anywhere and as long as the price of two taxi rides, to and from the airport, is cheaper than the car park then why pay to park.

Excellent idea on what is wasted space. it is not residential because building would not be allowed so close to the airport. good on him. But he doesn't stand a chance as it would not be SBC or Stobarts making the money. he has of course now given the idea to others outside the Borough who may put it where noone wants it, whereas this would be ideal.

I'm sorry Steve but you'll have an uphill battle with the council over this.
.
Flewitt is regarded by most (if not all) as completely useless and about as much help as an asthmatic ant with a heavy shopping load!
.
You wouldnt be wrong in thinking that the local tories hate to see local business succeed becuase as a rule their is usually nothing in it for them.
(if not they give a very good impression that, that is the case!)
.
Finally you must realise that for the last decade the tories have done nothing but reduce the available parking in the borough, why would they approve something that goes against this policy???

great idea steve you probably will have a good chance as stobart wants to be seen as the good guy, encouraging enterprize and as we all know what stobart wants stobart gets , hence the boundry name change "welcome to stobart on sea" plus the fact that stobart are at least 6 more people from there 7,500 job list nearer there target, one thing to remember that this airport expansion is more about freight than people, and the airport is only taking passangers until the dp port opens at corringham then its freight all the way , you may be better of to have a container storage yard, you may also find that you will not be able to get insured as you are so close to the airport , its also worth thinking about the uburnt fuel and gases that could be deposited over vehicals in your care

75% of passengers will arrive by car according to the latest plans submitted. Maybe you should consider building a multi-storey.

But there won't be any extra congestion or pollution according to Southend's tory cabinet.

Surely a councillor is meant to work with and for his electorate but not long until may, time to stop the normal three from ripping this area apart for there own benefits.

It'll be a long walk to the airport. terminal.
Some of the locals could rent out their driveways.

That's an interesting site, not seen that before.

My mother in law used to do that when she lived near Rayleigh station.

Could be a nice little earner, as long as you have insurance issues covered.
