My Fuzzie was nearly killed by vicious staffie

Suzanne Walters with Fuzzie Suzanne Walters with Fuzzie

A DOG almost died after being savaged by a Staffordshire bull terrier in Chalkwell Park.

Suzanne Walters’s beloved 14-year-old lhasa apso dog Fuzzie was attacked as the pair went for a Sunday morning stroll.

Two men, both in their twenties, were walking two dogs without leads at about 11am when one clamped its jaws around Fuzzie’s throat.

The little dog only just survived yet police initially refused to investigate, saying it was a matter for Southend Council’s dog warden.

However, a police investigation was later launched and Leigh Inspector Brad Dickel personally called Miss Walter to apologise.

Miss Walters, 41, from Westcliff, recalled her desperate attempts to save her dog.

She said: “These two dogs came running through the flower garden in a place where they should not have been off their leads. One attacked my dog and I couldn’t get it off her.

“One of the owners came over and picked his dog up with my dog still in its mouth.

“He ripped Fuzzie out of its mouth, but he couldn’t hold on to his dog and it attacked Fuzzie again.

“It bit her really badly round her neck. I thought she was going to die.

“I managed to get my dog in my arms then it came for me as well. It was terrifying, but all I could think of was protecting Fuzzie.”

Miss Waters escaped being attacked, but her little dog suffered four deep bite wounds to her neck and went into shock. She was admitted to a veterinary surgery overnight for her to stabilise.

Miss Walters, a nail technician, added: “These dogs were uncontrollable and should never have been in that part of the park.

“These sort of dogs should be muzzled at all times and kept on a lead because that could have been a child being attacked.

“It will take me a long time to get over this.

“There was no apology from the owners. I was screaming, but they didn’t say a word.

“Now I have been left to pick up the vet’s bill of £400, but all that matters is that Fuzzie survived.”

Miss Walters is now pleading with the owners to be responsible and ensure the dogs are restrained when in parks.

She added: “I can never go back to the park with Fuzzie because she would be so scared and I will be too terrified of it happening again too.”

Insp Brad Dickel, from Leigh police station, apologised to Miss Walters.

He said: “The offending dog was quite clearly dangerous and out of control in a public place and the police will therefore now investigate the matter.

“I have personally made contact with the family to apologise and now appeal for the owners, or anyone who thinks they might know who the owners are, to come forward to Leigh police.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101.

Everyone should have to have a dog permit.
It would be unfair to restrain my dog as he is obedient and friendly.
Most Staffs are lovely. In the wrong hands they can be deadly.

These dogs could have attacked a child, when are the laws going to protect us,an ineffective police farce, politicians that couldnt care less, nobody doing anything about these dangerous dogs, what next, maybe we should arm ourselves for defense when we go to the park. This is not a third world country although many of its residents come from those countries.something should be in place to protect decent people.Hope the dog survives and its owner gets justice.

another example of irresponsible dog owners who don't have the time, or, more likely cba to train their dog properly and not having enough sense to put a muzzle on the dog

A couple of years ago I was at a bouncy castle day with my children at chalkwell park and a staffie attacked another dog, and the owners stood and watched not attempting to pull the dog off. A member of the public hit the staffie with a walking stick to fend it off the other dog. The owners then walked away with there dog. This was where the bouncy castles were and loads of children running around. I wonder if it was the same dog.

Bringing back a dog license or even dog taxes to be paid on a yearly basis (with an up-to date home address of the owner & a Civil Responsability Insurance to enable a future owner to purchase a dog), would re-inforce the code of responsability towards their own animals and fellow walkers in the parks.
Perhaps England should consider this trend as in Switzerland. It's a viable system and works !

I agree ALL dogs should be muzzled in public. However, I will say that the reason staffies are picked on is because staffies do tend to have a reputation behind them, whether it is because of their fight dog status or the few idiot owners who insit of letting them run riot. Because of this, if people will insist on keeping them they must also endure the stigma attached to them.

i agree but my dog is never off the lead i dont put a muzzle on my dog because it dosnt leave my side and if i did go near a person it would lick them to death.
but i do get the odd person who just walks over and tries to cuddle him.
same with over owners of these little dogs like yorkshire terriers that are off the lead give up counting the amount of time they have run over to my dog and the owners dont care but if my dog was to attack back it would be my dogs fault.
it was my partner who wanted the staffie and i thought same as most people do i thought they where evil untill i got one.
in the right hands they are a very loving dogs but very loyal and thats there down fall.

good idea about dog license but why should i pay to tax my dog when i already pay for pet insurance.
my dog is micro chipped and it should be law to make every dog have one.
its the owners responabililty to pay any fees or fines they get why should a good dog owner like myself pay tax for other people not looking after there dogs?
Wouldnt suprise me if her dog was having ago at them like most little dogs do.

Its not the dogs fault, its the owners, around my way too many hoodies have them now as a must have accessory for intimidation purposes & train them as such...

Maybe these morons should have to take an IQ test before having a dog...
I am sure none would even come close to a normal IQ level

Dogs are animals, not little humans in fur coats. This staffie has most likely been taught to behave the way it did as no dog is born aggressive. As for dog licences, ha! Who will monitor who has or hasn't got one, what will happen to those who don't have one. Maybe the public should realise if we, HUMANS, bring ANIMALS into our world we should understand them and particularly the individual breed. Why is it if a human viciously attacks a human or dog they get a fitting punishment, but if a dog does the same they get put down?? The Dangerous dog law perhaps needs to focus on who made the dog vicious and deal with them more harshly.

What's the point of having a dog (which is an animal and need to be able to run free) if they can't do what is natural foe them. Why does everyone make the dogs suffer because of the negligence of some owners. Maybe a law should also be brought in to put humans who attack others in straight jackets or constantly in handcuffs.

Unfortunately Staffies are now the chav dog of choice, it's a cliche i know but it is NOT the breed that is the problem it is the owners. I had a Staffie and it was fine, as are all the other dogs my family have had. It was Dobermanns in the 70's, German Shepherds in the 80's, Rotties in the 90's and now the poor Staffy. I have a Dobermann who is constantly getting attacked by Jack Russells and Yorkshire Terriers, but no one bats an eyelid with a small dog. As a responsible dog owner i don't agree with a dog tax and all dogs certainly shouldn't be muzzled, but i would welcome a dog license whereby training is given in knowing how to handle a dog. I hope Fuzzie makes a speedy recovery and the chav owner is prosecuted with the dog confiscated and given a home with a responsible owner.
