Southend Airport reverted to its old World War usage after two Spitfires had a pit stop there at the weekend.

The airfield which was the launchpad for fighters during the Second World War, and known as RAF Rochford, had some familar faces stop by at the weekend.

Two Hurricanes and two Spitfires from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby had been taking part in airshows in Kent at Headcorn and Capel le Thorne and were on their way to North Weald when they landed for fuel.

They had earlier landed at the airport at 7.30am.

Simon Murdoch, of Hampton Gardens, Southend, pictured the old warplanes, and said: "Passengers and aircraft enthusiasts got a treat on Sunday afternoon when a 'squadron'  of WW2 Battle of Britain wartime fighters landed at Southend Airport for fuel.

"During WW2 Southend airport was know as RAF Rochford."
