SWIMMERS will get the chance to take the plunge this weekend to raise cash for Havens hospices.

Havens Hospices will be hosting its eighth annual Great Pier Swim on Sunday.

Starting at Chalkwell Beach the 3.3km route takes swimmers under Southend Pier before finishing at Jubilee Beach.

A 900m route is also taking place starting at Three Shells Beach to Jubilee Beach.

Wetsuits are optional for both events. Only the 3.3km route will be timed.

Children can get involved this year with a new Seal Swim, a 120m open water sea swim for children, allowing them the chance of swimming in the Thames Estuary.

All Seal Swimmers must be aged ten to 11 if they are an affiliated club member or 12 to 14 if they are non-affiliated.

All will receive a medal after the race.

Jason Curtis, Havens events fundraiser, said: “Havens Hospices doesn’t charge for its care and that is only possibly thanks to people who take on some of our toughest challenges, like the Great Pier Swim.

“In this hot weather what better way to enjoy our stunning estuary surroundings and raise money for a local charity.

“Registrations are still open for both the main routes and the Seal Swim so it’s not too late to sign up.

“Together, we’re making every day count for those who need our care.”

The event is organised by Havens Hospices which incorporates Little Havens Hospice in Thundersley for babies, children and teenagers and Fair Havens Hospice in Westcliff, for adults.
