WINNING paintings have been unveiled at the station art competition commemorating 125 of the Railway and Rayleigh Station.

The Railway themed competition involved all 8 Primary Schools in the town and the winners had their work professional pained into a large Mural.

In all over 1,000 pupils took part and the judges were from Rayleigh Town Council, Abellio Greater Anglia and Rayleigh Through The Looking Glass.

The paintings are currently on view at the railway station and were “officially” unveiled on Wednesday.

Children from Wyburns Primary School, Edward Francis Primary School and Rayleigh Primary School turned out today to see their artwork take pride of place at Rayleigh station.

Marcus Whittington and Jessica Davies entered a competition, run by Rayleigh Through the Looking Glass, to paint a scene to celebrate the 125th anniversary of rail reaching Rayleigh.

Marcus, from Edward Francis, was chosen from 125 entries in the Key Stage one category and his work depicts the steam heritage of rail.

Jessica, from Rayleigh Primary School, was chosen from 250 entries in the key stage two categories and her work portrays the modern world of rail and how it connects cities.

The winning entry in the school mural category was painted by Wyburns Primary School and shows both the heritage and modern railway and scenes of Rayleigh.

Talking about the project Mike Davies of Rayleigh Through the Looking Glass said: “The arrival of the railway, in 1889, transformed Rayleigh from a tiny village to the vibrant bustling town with the 35,000 plus population we have today.”

Bill Sier, Area Customer Service Manager for Abellio Greater Anglia said, “We are thrilled to have three such wonderful pieces of artwork to brighten up the station. The children have done a great job and we’re delighted with the results.”
