SOUTHEND has a new mayor for the year.
Veteran Tory Andrew Moring, first elected to Eastwood Park 16 years ago, will be the borough’s mayor for the 2015-16 year.
The chartered engineer, who also has a Masters in English Law, takes the reins from outgoing mayor Chris Walker.
Mr Moring was coronated at a speical event at Southend’s Civic Centre, in Victoria Avenue, earlier today.
He said: “For those of you that know me, you’ll know I’m not often lost for words, but I’m very close here.
“It is not only an honour to be here, but it is very moving too. Anything is possible if you work hard for it.”
He revealed his charities for the year will be Southend Samaritans and Southend Community Fund.
Outgoing mayor Chris Walker raised over £44,000 for charity during his stint in the red robes.
Independent Dr Vel has been made deputy mayor, and will take over as mayor in 2016-17.
