A MAN has been released from bail with no further action after being arrested on suspicion of rape.

The 24-year-old was arrested following a party at Cluny House, Southend, in the early hours of January 20 when a woman reported she had been raped.

He was granted bail later that day, again on April 1 and was due to answer bail on August 8, but officers have now confirmed he is no longer a suspect.

A police spokesman said: “Following further enquiries, police have now cancelled the suspect’s bail and no further police action against him is planned.”

It's unfortunate that they can't name him when they'd happily show CCTV pictures of 'suspects' on here.

Why is it unfortunate? Maybe he is entirely innocent.

Apparently some elightened countries (inter alia Canada and Oz - hardly banana republics) have removed "rape" from their statute books and replaced it with a range of crimes - sexual assault, serious sexual assault, sexual assault with violence - that sort of thing. Very sensible - far easier for the prosecutors to build a case and far easier for juries to come to the right decision. Somehow, though, I suspect that The Sisterhood wouldnt allow it here.

That's my point entirely. They'd happily show pictures of possibly innocent suspects but can't name an innocent man. I would hazard a guess that over the last 8 months some people that know him or know of him had already made their judgements - why not name and clear him?
