Student flats plan passed for empty Southend shop
A DERELICT store will be transformed into flats for students after plans were given the go ahead.
The former HMV shop in Queens Road, Southend, will be converted into eight flats sleeping 34 people with a covered courtyard area in the centre as well as two shops on the ground floor.
After two years of working with Southend Council, applicants Panther Security will start work immediately.
Architects ACS Design says the building, which has been empty for two years, is split into “pods” with seven four-bedroom flats and one six-bedroom flat.
Paul Seager, from ACS, said: “We have worked with the local authority in getting to this stage. We have also worked alongside a number of people who specialise in student accommodation we also took on board information students gave us with regards to living accomodation.”
The development, aimed at second and third year students, also includes a cycle store, laundry and a lift. The ground floor will be divided into two shops.

The high street needs to attract people that actually spend money.

More chewing gum down the high street, more litter under the bridge, more reasons to avoid southend especially at night. More reasons to shop anywhere except southend. Should have built the uni outside town centre.
