THIS was the scene this afternoon as firefighters spent more than an hour cutting a woman free from a car wreckage following a head-on crash.

Her red Nissan Micra collided with a white van on Clay Hill Road, Basildon, at around 2.30pm.

She was taken to Basildon Hospital shortly after 3.30pm with suspected fractures to both her arms and legs. The East of England Ambulance Service said the woman was in a serious but stable condition.

The driver of the white van was not injured but he was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police put in road closures at the Clay Hill Road and Sparrows Herne roundabout, and at Gun Hill and Swallow Dale while the vehicles were recovered and casualties were taken to hospital.

An Essex Police spokesman said an investigation into the cause of the crash has been launched and appealed for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who saw what happened should call Basildon police station on 101.

Road was only re-opened around 6.30 pm, after seeing the state of the two vehicles let's hope the drivers are not too seriously hurt and make a speedy recovery

How on earth did this happen? Who was at fault then? White van man who thinks he owns the road, or naughty mummy on her mobile phone?

If it weren't for jumping to conclusions this site wouldn't get half the comments it does.

According to a comment on the story under another heading it suggests 'the van was speeding, tried to overtake another car and hit the red car head on' ... but please don't take my word on this as I am not saying this is what happened

Naughty mummy on her mobile phone?! How dare you jump to conclusions!!! The driver of the micra is a 60 year old lady and is an extremely close friend of mine. She was on her own side of the road when the white van came into her side of the road and hit her head on - full details, I'm sure, will be released by Police when they can. Don't jump to stupid conclusions - as one of the above posters says, this site wouldn't have half of the nasty comments if people like you kept quiet.

I hope your friend is not too badly injured and makes a fully recovery, the car was in an awful state with the car being in the road and the roof being on the grass verge after having to be cut off
